Doctor Bio

Originally from Corpus Christi, Texas, I graduated from Mary Carroll High School. I moved to San Antonio after graduation and obtained my Bachelor of Arts in Biology at St. Mary's University. I completed my dental education with a Doctor of Dental Surgery from the University of Texas Health Science Center San Antonio Dental School. In my opinion, regardless of what you choose as a profession, you can never stop learning. To keep up to date with the newest technology, products, and ideas, I frequently attend continuing dental education courses. Recently, I have over 200 hours of continuing education, included implant surgery and restoration, Invisalign, and 6 Month Smiles. This ensures I can continue to provide only the highest level of care for you and your families.

Great place to get your teeth taken care of! My dental hygienist Jennifer made sure I was comfortable and worked around me to make sure we could get it done! I had bad experiences at different dental offices before but this place gave me the confidence to get back in the chair and take care of my teeth. Dr. Vela also gave me a ton of knowledge and pointers on what I should get taken care of first and reasoning why. Get here and get seen!

Emergency Dental Services We Provide

No dental emergency is the same. You might be dealing with a toothache that won't go away, or you might have taken a blow to the face and cracked a tooth. No matter the cause of your oral issue, Dr. Vela and his team can provide several different services to alleviate your pain and restore your oral health.

Our services include:

  • Toothache Relief - We've met many patients who ignored the early signs of a toothache. This can lead to more complex issues, as a toothache is typically a symptom of a larger problem that needs to be treated. While over-the-counter medications can provide temporary relief, they shouldn't be relied on as a permanent solution. If you're experiencing a persistent toothache, we can help treat the cause of the issue and provide permanent relief.
  • Jaw Swelling Reduction - Your oral health involves more than just your teeth and gums. Your jawbone and surrounding tissue provide crucial support for your teeth. If you notice swelling in your jaw, this could mean an infection is spreading throughout the jawbone and into neighboring tissue. Visit a professional immediately if you notice swelling in your jaw, as this problem needs to be treated to protect your oral health.
  • Gum Pain - Dr. Vela and his team can provide the relief you need for gum pain. Gum pain is typically a sign that there is an issue in the deeper tissue of the gums. We can help you find the cause of the pain and provide the treatment necessary to relieve the pain.
  • Root Canals - A root canal might be necessary to save a tooth that is severely damaged or decayed. For many patients, the tooth in question previously required a crown or filling. Root canals work to restore the connection between the root and tooth, which preserves your tooth and relieves your pain. This also prevents the tooth from needing extraction.
  • Avulsed and Damaged Tooth Care - Also referred to as a “knockout” tooth, this situation can be the result of an accident such as a car accident or sports injury. When a tooth is knocked out, you should seek treatment as soon as possible so that a professional can expect the area for further damage. In certain cases, the tooth can be restored and saved. Other dental damage can involve chips, cracks, and breaks, and each needs to be examined by a professional to determine the next best step.
  • Extractions - If one or more of your teeth are severely decayed or damaged, an infection can spread throughout the rest of your mouth. When this happens, fully removing the tooth might be your best option. Extractions help protect your surrounding teeth from infection and can provide immediate pain relief.
  • Filling and Crown Repair - Fillings and crowns are meant to protect teeth that have previously needed dental work. While these were made to fit your teeth, sometimes they can become loose and fall out. It's important that you seek professional care as soon as possible if you need a crown or filling repaired or replaced.

Avoiding Dental Emergencies

Managing a dental emergency can be taxing. Not every emergency can be avoided, but many can be prevented with proper dental care. You can start this from the comfort of your home. Maintaining a routine of brushing and flossing every day can help protect your teeth and gums.

We also recommend you schedule regular six-month appointments with us at All Smiles Dental Center. This will allow our staff to monitor your oral health and provide professional cleaning services outside of emergency services. By visiting regularly, Dr. Vela can prevent minor issues from becoming more problematic.
